Dr. Stephen Martin, Global Head Pharmaceutical Research, Novartis Animal Health

Steve Martin is responsible for global pharmaceutical research for Novartis Animal Health, a business unit in the Consumer Health Division of Novartis. He joined Novartis in the spring of 2006 following 16 years in animal health research & development positions in the industry and several years in academia.

A graduate of the University of Manchester, UK, Mr. Martin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology and Virology. He also received a Doctorate of Philosophy in collaboration with Cambridge University whilst performing his research at Pirbright Animal Virus Research Institute, UK.

Prior to joining Novartis, Mr. Martin was with Pfizer Animal Health and its predecessor companies (The Upjohn Company, Pharmacia & Upjohn and Pharmacia). With Pfizer, he most recently was director of US discovery where he focused on therapeutic and oncology treatment opportunities in the animal health area. Prior to that, he worked in biological discovery, exploratory development and scientific areas with a focus on vaccine-related assignments with Pfizer and Pharmacia.

Prior to joining the industry, Mr. Martin was a postdoctoral scientist and then research associate professor at the University of Tennessee. There, his focus was on murine models for the assessment of cell mediated immune responses to viruses; establishing viral keratitis models for the assessment of liposomal delivery of antiviral drugs; and using recombinant DNA technology to create and assess some of the first virus vectored vaccine candidates for herpes viruses.
